Rotary Club of Palm Springs Meeting of February 15, 2017

Incoming Prez Nadine Kohler called the meeting to order with Jerry Ogburn, Helene Kalfuss, and Milt Levinson performing the opening honors. Milt introduced many visitors including those from Desert Hot Springs Rotary, Manny Aragon, Alex Espinoza, Jack Chatman, Brenda and Ivan Sewell, and husband of Carole, Mark Rogers. Also visiting were Rotarians Linda Baldwin, Madison, WI, Dick Sweeney, Grand Junction, CO, and our good friend Karl Kruger, Irvine and husband of Nandy.

Nancy Palmer said come one, come all to our Progressive Dinner on March 12th. Note to new members: don’t miss this wonderful fellowship social event! It’s just $10!  Details to follow.  Proceeds benefit our Homeless Youth Program.

Milt Levinson began the announcements with an invitation to the March 9th Ensuring Great Futures Gala, benefiting the Boys and Girls Club of PS. Our Rotary Club of Palm Springs is being honored as ‘Community Angels’ along with the Ritz-Carlton Hotel. Barbara Stanford has invitations. Purchase tickets online at

Milt continued (one busy guy!) on March 2nd, our Club will participate in the Read Across America Day. We’ll be reading to students at Cahuilla School for an hour. This is an important literacy Rotary project. He needs 12 Rotarians to meet at the school at 9AM.

Nadine introduced Alejandro (Alex) Espinoza, Director of Projects for the Desert Healthcare District and proud member of the DHS Rotary Club.

During his enthusiastic presentation Alex invited us to participate in a park beautification project located adjacent to the Rosarito Elementary School. The goal is to make the park a place where families can run, jump, and play in a safe environment. Alex invited us to a work day in Rosarito on May 6h and ribbon cutting on the 7th.  Get your passports in order!

Oops…we had two late visitors, Kenneth Acha, MD and Matthew Lewis, MD from UCR Family Medical.  They requested $500 to paint the Free Clinic at the Well of the Desert.  Our Board had a busy stand-up meeting to address all these worthy projects. We will, no doubt, be hearing from them at our next meeting!

Fine master Tim Ellis, in keeping with the theme today, tested us on Mexico trivia. Yes, we share a 1989 mile border and the President of Mexico is Enrique Nieto plus other factoids. Lance Levitt, Andrea Madrigal, Barb Stanford, Rev Jim Griffes, Judy Bronstein, Karl Kruger, and Linda Holmes all donated $$$$!

Jerry Ogburn won $26 with the winning ticket…but missed the $155 pot.
