Jamey recognized Carole Rogers for becoming the President of the Desert Healthcare District  Board.

Jamey thanked all for a successful and fun Holiday Auction, raising $4600 for the Homeless Youth Project.

Mike Brill continues to improve and has been moved to a rehab facility in Palm Springs...see details below.

Frank Peabody reminded all of the Tour de Palm Springs happening on January 20/21. We have just a few spots open to volunteer for our apparel sales booth.

Arlene Rosenthal shared that the Well of the Desert is providing Holiday cheer and Santa at the Convention Center on Christmas Day, 11-3, for those less fortunate. Thank you Arlene, your staff, and volunteers for this heartwarming event.

Jamey then passed around an envelope to collect gratuities for our service staff.  It was presented at the end of the meeting.

Hilton Banquet Team

Prez Jamey introduced Roshan Patel, Sales Manager for the Living Desert.  He told us of all the special activities at the Living Desert, especially during this Holiday Season and through May 2017.  They are a gem in our Desert!  Roshan surprised us with two passes, per person, to the Living Desert.  For more information, go to

Fine master Bob Elsner regaled us with questions about the Holidays, beginning with when Egg Nog first appeared in England and Gene Autry sang Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer in 1940, etc… Right or wrong, Tim Ellis, Stewart Cross, Eileen Reilly, Margie Taft, Carole Rogers, Nancy Palmer, Frank Peabody, Bob Barrett, Judy Bronstein, and Roger Mickalko all donated $10.

Happy folks included Arlene Rosenthal, Judy Bronstein, Bob Elsner, Stewart Cross, Carole’s sister, Kathy, Oregon Bill, and Bob Barrett. Frank Peabody won the raffle but missed the ‘big one".

The meeting was called to order by Prez Jamey Canfield.  The Pledge of Allegiance was led by Prez Jamey, the 4-Way Test was led by Johnny Coladonato, and the invocation was given by Bob Barrett.
Judy Bronstein announced that Mike Brill should be transferred today to Palm Springs Health Care on Sunrise, and he will be able to have visitors.  We had a silent prayer for Mike’s recovery from his recent stroke.  Milt Levinson brought a banner for everyone to sign for Mike.
Jamey announced that Carole Rogers has been elected President of the Board for the Desert Healthcare District, and everyone offered cheers and congratulations to Carole.
Helene Kalfuss reported that the donation to the Club Foundation in the will of Don Aikens totals over $40,000.  Everyone expressed deep gratitude for this wonderful gift.
Milt Levinson announced that Barbara Stanford has completed corrective surgery and is receiving wound care for her leg.  Everyone wished Barbara a speedy recovery and quick return to Rotary meetings!  We miss you, Barb!!
Jacque Wachs led the introduction of the following guests: Carole Rogers introduced her sister Kathy Watson who has been attending so often it’s time for her to become a member!  Eh, Kathy, we’d love to have you join!  Milt introduced Doris from Desert Hot Springs, who is a potential new member.  Doris attended our holiday auction and also attended last Friday’s holiday breakfast.  Our newest member, Kathy Weyer, was introduced by Judy Bronstein.  Dr. Dan Keller introduced his two beautiful young daughters, Cameron & Corinne.
In the absence of President-Elect Nadine Koehler, Prez Jamey introduced our guest speaker, Cara Van Dijk (prounced Van Dike).  Cara has been working in media and public relations in the Coachella Valley for more than 17 years.  She moved to the valley in 1999 to work for KESQ-TV, where she produced the 5 p.m. news, and was later promoted to assistant news director.  In 2002, Cara helped launch CBS Local 2, and was the founding producer of Eye on the Desert.
Cara moved into public relations after taking some time off to start a family.  She has two children: Gracie, 12, and Ben, 10.
Cara does communications consulting for several clients, including the non-profit Palm Canyon Theatre. She showed a video of several Palm Canyon Theatre productions, and announced that the Theatre is celebrating it’s 20th anniversary during the 2016-17 season.  A Gala will be held Saturday, February 18, the first weekend of the production of Evita, and she encouraged Rotarians to attend this wonderful event.
Cara gave the history of the Theatre, which originally was the Frances Stevens School gym.  It was renovated into a 215-seat theatre with auditorium seating.  The Theatre hosts a Kids Camp, and those kids join the productions.  Donations, scholarships, and sponsors are needed for this program.
Rotarian Frank Peabody has been a volunteer usher at the Theatre for over three years.  Volunteers are needed for ushers, set painters, lighting techs, etc.  In answer to a question from Johnny, Cara said “adult beverages” are on sale during the productions for $3.  Milt asked if we could have a special Rotary Night at the Theatre, and Cara said yes, with tickets reduced to $22, and she said to contact the Box Office Manager to arrange a date.
Johnny Coladonato gave us a quiz about New Year’s Fun Facts.  Fines were paid by Dan Keller, Lance Levitt, Linda Holmes, Margie Taft, Jacque Wachs, and Kathy Watson.
Jacque gave a Happy Dollar for her new grandson who was born yesterday!  Judy Bronstein gave a Happy Dollar for today’s speaker, and another Happy Dollar when she announced Kathy Weyer will be on TV tonight on Eye on the Desert, speaking about her book.  Cara Van Dijk gave a Happy Dollar for the honor of being our guest speaker today.
Weekly Drawing: $12 was won (again) by Linda Holmes!  However, she didn’t draw the black marble and therefore lost $100, which remains in the pot.
